Ogunbote dismisses Rangers’ ‘comeback king’ tag

Rangers Coach, Gbenga Ogunbote has rejected the ‘comeback kings’ title given to his side, while insisting his team are playing to their strength irrespective of how a game is won.

It would be recalled that the Flying Antelopes won the2018  Nigeria Federation Cup having come back from three goals deficit with less than forty minutes left of the 90 to beat Kano Pillars on penalties to pick Caf Confederation ticket.

While appearing for the first time on the continent since 2016, Rangers defeated Defence Force of Ethiopia 5-1 on aggregate.

After winning the first leg at home 2-0, The former Nigerian champions came back from a goal down to beat their hosts 1-3 in the second, the feat that earned the team the ‘comeback king’ tag among fans and journalists.

“Our comeback in some recent matches is not a question of strategy rather we always play to our strength,” Ogunbote told CAF website.

“I feel very great after winning both the home and away match against Defence FC of Lesotho in the last round. After the first leg, there were criticisms here that we didn’t play well.

“But we went over there (Addis Ababa) for the second leg and got an away win. These victories home and away confirmed our superiority and I want to give thanks to God for that.”

Ogunbote agrees that the Nigerian side hasn’t been doing well against the North African teams but optimistic that his boys will get the job done against USMBA of Algeria.

“Though many Nigerians teams have not done well against north African teams recently, I believe there’s always a turnaround in life,” he continued.

“We need to work harder in order to get very far in this competition; we shall do our best and make sure that they (USMBA) do not stop us at this stage.”
