Ojo Olorunleke’s MOTM display moves Akwa United to playoff spot

Godspower Aniefiok’s goal on 15 seconds brightened Akwa United’s chances of qualifying for the Super Six after a 1-0 win against Yobe Stars in a Matchday 18 fixture played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, Sunday.

Former Sunshine Stars safe hands, Ojo Olorunleke kept his place in goal for Akwa United for a third consecutive match, while Yobe Stars dropped three from the side that were held by El-Kanemi Warriors in Damaturu on Matchday 17.

The visitors who knew a win in Uyo would keep them in the top flight for at least another matchday, got their day off to a sad note, when Sunday Robert’s pass was heading towards goalkeeper, Terkaa Melai. Godspower Aniefiok popped up and robbed him of the ball to square home with just 15 seconds into the game.

Yobe Stars were handed a bright opportunity to draw level on 33 minutes, when Blaise Adou brought down Obinna Ukwu in the penalty box. Philip Auta would only see his penalty drift to the direction of Ojo Olorunleke, who calmly put the ball to safety.

Three minutes into the second half, Cyril Olisema could have doubled Akwa’s advantage. The midfielder was perfectly picked by Mfon Udoh, but agonizingly shot off target from 10 yards.

Mfon Udoh missed an opportunity to reach double figures, when he struck a penalty against the woodwork on 55 minutes after Godspower Aniefiok was earlier brought down by Terkaa Melai.

Both sides were wasteful late in the second half, as Akwa United held on for the three points.
