Okoye’s Sparta Rotterdam slump to embarrassing defeat against FC Utrecht

It was a day to forget for Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper Maduka Okoye as his team suffered 4-0 to FC Utrecht in the first game of the season.

Okoye enjoyed a successful debut season in the Eredivisie last season, where he kept ten clean sheets and won Sparta Rotterdam’s player of the season award.

However, the Nigerian shot-stopper had no answers to FC Utrecht rampaging attackers as he was beaten four time at the Stadion Galgenwaard.

Okoye conceded the first goal two minutes after the kick off when Adam Maher beat him from near post.

The 21-year-old picked the ball out of his net again in the 39th minutes when Adrian Dalmau slotted the ball past him, but the goal was later ruled out for offside by VAR few minutes later.

FC Utrecht finally get their second of the game six minutes after an hour mark when Mark van der Maarel head the ball home.

It became 4-0 in the added time as Simon Gustafson converted from the penalty spot. He sent Okoye the wrong way after Bart Vriends handled the ball in the penalty box.
