Paul Onuachu insists he not the best player in the Belgian Jupiler league for the outgoing year and has ruled him out of winning the Golden Shoe for the second time.

Onuachu ruled himself out of contention for the award, tipping Belgian shot stopper Simon Mignolet instead.

The Golden Shoe award is for the best player in Belgium for a calendar year, and the Nigerian is one of many nominees for the top gong.

Paul Onuachu enjoyed a productive 2022, despite his trouble with injury.

In an interview with Voetbal 24 ahead of the next award ceremony in January, he said :

“I think Simon Mignolet has to win it. He has had a very good year and is an excellent goalkeeper. There is no doubt about that, he would be the deserved winner.

“He saved a lot of points for Club Brugge. There is also Tarik Tissoudali from KAA Gent who has a chance, I think. Although I fear for him that his knee injury will affect his final result too much.

“I don’t think I will make it myself. If I get on the podium, I think it will be second or third.”

Onuachu has been in fine form so far this season, scoring 13 goals in 14 matches before the break.

He won the award in the 2020/21 season, scoring a recording breaking 33 goals in one season.
