Paul Onuachu found the net for Southampton, but his late goal was not enough to prevent the Saints from suffering a 2-1 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday.
Jørgen Strand Larsen’s brace put the visitors firmly in control before Onuachu, introduced in the second half, grabbed his third goal of the season.
The Nigerian striker, who was left out of the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, reminded everyone of his quality with a well-taken strike.
However, it ultimately served as nothing more than a consolation as Wolves claimed all three points.
After the match, the striker admitted that Southampton’s performance was not good enough.
“It’s difficult scoring my first goal in front of the [home] fans and we’re losing, it’s not good enough and we need to do better as a team and individually,” he told the club’s official website.

“We had a good start in the first 20 minutes but it’s difficult to explain this loss because we’re playing on our home ground and we had the feeling we were going to beat Wolves.
You could see we were the better team, even though we lost. It’s just not good enough.”
Onuachu’s goal was his third for the club in 2025 after breaking his drought on January 19.
Having struggled to find the net in the first half of the season, the Nigerian forward appears to be regaining his rhythm despite Southampton’s ongoing struggles.
The Saints have now become only the fourth team in English top-flight history to lose nine consecutive home games in a single season, following Birmingham (1985/86), Wolves (2011/12), and Watford (2021/22).
They remain bottom of the Premier League with just nine points—two fewer than Derby County’s infamous 2007/08 tally and 17 points behind Vítor Pereira’s Wolves.
