Nigerian forward Paul Onuachu is disappointed with Genk’s underwhelming performance in the 2021-2022 campaign.
The Limburgers had a good campaign in the 2020-2021 campaign, winning the Belgian Cup and also qualifying for the Champions League at the end of the season.
However, the team fell below expectations this season, as they miss out on the Belgian league title, and cup and also failed to pick a ticket for European football next season.
“I think we started the season with too much confidence. After our strong finish last year, we thought we would continue,” Onuachu told HLN after last night’s home defeat to Gent.
“Maybe that’s why we didn’t work hard enough in the beginning. We had it all. Okay, we had our dose of bad luck, but that’s part of it. We believed for too long that it would be okay. We were too relaxed. when we realized that it was too late, that hit hard.” The striker said.
Onuachu is part of the success story last season as he contributed 35 goals in all competitions and broke every record in Belgium.
The current season proved difficult — with the Nigerian forward scoring 21 in all competitions. He was then criticized by some section media and fans.
“I really don’t mind that. I wouldn’t even know if I’m being criticized. I don’t understand Dutch, I don’t read newspapers, I rarely watch football websites and I don’t have any apps on my phone. Of course, I sometimes get something from a fellow player, but that has no effect on me. He said.
