It wasn’t the ideal start to the new year for striker Victor Osimhen as his Napoli side succumbed to Inter Milan at San Siro on Wednesday.
It was the first competitive game for both sides since the FIFA World Cup break, and Napoli lost 1-0 courtesy of Edin Dzeko’s second half header.
Osimehn, 24, who led the attack for Napoli was far from his usual best as he was denied space to operate by the Inter defenders.
His best chance came in the second half when chested down a floated cross, but Hakan Calhanoglu managed to do just about enough to prevent the finish from six yards.
He later broke free from defenders and waited for a cross from Kvicha Kvaratskhelia only for the Georgian midfielder to hit the side-netting.
Napoli came close to finding the equalizer towards the end of the game, but Andre Onana made an instinctive save using his chest to keep out Giacomo Raspadori’s strike from 12 yards in the final minute.
The defeat ended Napoli’s unbeaten Serie A record and the lead at the top has been cut to five points.
