Victor Osimhen had the last laugh as his Napoli side got a vital victory against Ademola Lookman’s Atalanta in a Serie A top of the table clash in Bergamo on Saturday.
The Super Eagles stars were named starters for their respective sides and both proved their form going into the game was no fluke.
The hosts had the first chance on three minutes when Ademola Lookman picked out Rasmus Hojlund with a low cross, and the forward failed to beat Alex Meret from one-on-one situation.
Ademola Lookman however drew the first blood as he netted from the penalty spot to give Atalanta an early lead after Victor Osimhen was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the penalty box.
The former RB Leipzig and Everton forward now has five goals in his last six league games.
Osimhen quickly made up for his mistake by drawing Napoli level, as he headed in a Piotr Zielinski chip to the back post from a short corner.
Osimhen got his assist few minutes later when he broke away from Merih Demiral down the right and played a pass for Eljif Elmas who made no mistake from 10 yards.
Atalanta came close to equalizing in the 55th minutes when Alex Meret made a great one-handed save from Joakim Maehle’s effort and Lookman’s rebound was deflected onto the crossbar by Matias Olivera.
Hojlund wasted another chance passed on to him by Lookman, when he stumbled at the key moment, with just goalkeeper to beat.
Napoli however held on for a vital win to maintain their unbeaten run in the league.
