Poor club structures, shabby planning and ‘terrible’ players’ welfare are the key reasons behind the unimpressive performance of Nigerian clubs in continental club competitions according to former Enyimba FC player Bob Osim.
The last Nigerian club to win a continental title was Enyimba, 14 years ago, and Osim who was part of the conquering Aba Elephants side expressed his disappointment with the regression of the teams in the topflight.
Osim told Brila.net it is disappointing to see no NPFL club in the group stage of the CAF Champions League this season.
Enyimba’s back to back CAF Champions League victories remain the benchmark for teams and even the Aba club has since failed to come close.
This season, the two-time former champions along with three other NPFL clubs will fight to reach the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.
