Pop the Champagne! Impact Sub Alex Iwobi fires Nigeria to 2018 World Cup

Alex Iwobi made a huge impact coming off the bench to secure the 2018 FIFA World Cup ticket with a 73rd minute goal as Nigeria narrowly defeated Zambia 1-0 in Uyo on Saturday.

Iwobi came off the bench in the 66th minute and paid Gernot Rohr’s trust with a goal for the entire Country to celebrate six minutes later.

Zambia were disciplined and threatened with every attacking move. Wedson Nyirenda’s men had not lost a game on the road in this qualifying series; picking a point against Cameroon in Limbe and all three in Constantine against Algeria.

On this day though, although the sides did not create many clear cut chances, the game was not begging for excitement.

The win moves Nigeria six points clear on top of group B with Zambia pegged at seven points after five group matches each.

In the other group game, Cameroon defeated Algeria – who have been poor in this campaign – 2-0 in Yaoundé.

Goals from Clinton N’Jie (25′) and his replacement Frantz Pangop, who netted in the 89th minute.

The Indomitable Lions third in the group now have six points while Algeria are rooted bottom with a single point.

The final group b games are billed for November 6.
