Nasarawa United have emerged the champions of the 3rd edition of Ahlan Cup, a preseason Tournament sponsored by Alhaji Sharif Rabiu Inuwa, Kano State Football Association Chairman and Executive Committee Member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The Lafia-based club defeated El-kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri 1-0 courtesy Abubakar Lawal’s spot kick in the 20 minutes after Lucky Erimuya handled the ball in the box from Victor Okoro’s low shot.
However, El-kanemi Warriors, coached by former technical adviser of Nasarawa United Baba Ganaru Mohammed, tried all they could to get back into the game but all their efforts proved abortive as Bala Nkiyu side held their own to come out victorious.
Nasarawa Technical Adviser Bala Nkiyu won the best coach of the tournament award after guiding his team to five wins out of six games while the club’s duo of goalkeeper Danlami Umar and striker Abubakar Lawal emerged as the most valuable player and highest goal scorer (4 goals) of the tournament respectively.
This is the first preseason cup triumph for the Solid Miners since its 16 years of existence.
However, Ahlan Cup, the preseason tournament that hold the reputation for the biggest preseason tournament in the country, was attended by sixteen teams including Kano Pillars, Rivers United, Lobi Stars, Plateau United, Katsina United, Abia Warriors, Wikki Tourists, El-Kanemi Warriors, Jigawa Golden Stars, Sokoto United, Kwara United among others.
