Redknapp’s interest in Ghanaian Star, Acquah could block Onazi’s Birmingham Move

Redknapp’s interest in Ghanaian Star, Acquah could block Onazi’s Birmingham Move

Birmingham manager Harry Redknapp says the club are close to signing midfielder Ogenyi Onazi from Trabzonspor.

Reports in Turkey say a £4million fee has been agreed, and the player is due to fly to the Midlands to undergo a medical but alternatively, Afriye Acquah is also on Birmingham’s radar.

After spending four years with Lazio, Ogenyi Onazi made the switch to Super Lig side Trabzonspor last summer. The 24-year old Nigerian instantly became a regular starter and enjoyed an encouraging maiden campaign in Turkey.

However, Onazi’s future was thrown in the air after announcing via his agent that he had terminated his contract with Trabzonspor due to unpaid wages.Although his agent revoked his decision, there is clearly unwanted tension between the player, which has put his future in doubt with the Trabzon-based heavyweights

The 24-year-old Nigeria international joined Trabzonspor from Lazio last summer and made 32 league appearances scoring two goals.

Reports in Italy say Birmingham have also made a £7m bid for Torino midfielder Afriyie Acquah.

Redknapp says he is keen on the Ghanaian, but won’t sign him as well as Onazi.

“You’ve got to see what you can get really” Redknapp told Sky Sports News.

“If you can get them both you’ve got to make a decision, if you can only get one you take him, but if you can’t get any…you just pray…I don’t know where you go, but we’re trying to get them in.”
