Retaining the league title would be difficult – Akwa United’s Ubong Essien

Akwa United combative midfielder Ubong Essien has restated his team’s has to show hunger and desire in all their games to ensure they defend their title at the end of the season.

Akwa United strolled to the title last season — picking 71 points from 38 matches to win their maiden title.

The Promise Keepers started their title defence with a 3-0 trashing of Kano Pillars, before drawing Shooting Stars 1-1 in Ibadan on match day two.

They managed to edge Gombe United in week three, but hard labor win, ushered in a 2-0 defeat at Nasarawa United over the weekend.

Essien, who is an integral part of Coach Kennedy Boboye’s team this term has started all four games this season for the champions.

The young midfielder, said they have to give their maximum on the pitch, because every team want to do well against the champions.

“Last season was a very good football year for us at Akwa United and we believe that this year will be a better season for us. It’s our desire to continue with the fine form of last season.

“We have played some matches already this season and I can say that this campaign will be tough because as champions, every opponent will want to give us a fight and that is the reason we won’t leave anything to chance anytime we play. ” He said.

Akwa United sits fourth on the table —with seven points from opening four matches.
