Rivers United feasts on Niger Tornadoes, opens four points lead over Plateau United

Rivers United opened a four points lead at the top of the NPFL with a 3-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes in Port Harcourt on Monday.

Rivers United needed just 35 minutes to banished the ghost of the defeat they suffered at Sunshine Stars of Akure last week. Two first half goals from Ishaq Rafiu and Nyima Nwagua out the Stanley Eguma’s aide in firm control of the game.

Ishaq Rafiu scored the goal after 31 minutes of the play. He scores with a brilliant lob over GK Abdullahi following a through-pass from Morice Chukwu.

It was his 12th goal of the current NPFL campaign and first from open play in the last two months.

The winger was involved in the second goal two minutes later. His free kick was saved by but the rebound fell to Akuneto who lays the ball onto the path of Nyima Nwagua to stab home.

The three points was sealed in the 80th minute by Konan Ruffin Ngouan who tapped in from a Nelson Esor assist after a beautiful counter-attacking move from Rivers United.

Rivers United now leading closest rival Plateau United by four points on the league table. They also opened a fourteen points lead ahead of third place Rangers international.
