Rohr will not invite Ezenwa for AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone – Ike

Former Super Eagles assistant coach Ike Shorunmu says Ikechukwu Ezenwa could be left out of Gernot Rohr’s team for the upcoming 2022 African Cup of Nations against Sierra Leone.

The former Super Eagles first choice goaltender made this known to brila.net while assessing the chances of Heartland goalkeeper reclaiming his slot after missing the last two matches against Tunisia and Algeria.

With the Super Eagles scheduled to take on Sierra Leone in November, Ike opined that lack of domestic league action could cost Ezenwa a place in the squad as Gernot Rohr is expected to pick players who have minutes under their belt.

“The league has been off close to eight months, probably the man ( Rohr) does not want to any risk and decided to pick active goalkeepers for the friendlies .”

“Ezenwa could be left out of the qualifiers as well if the league doesn’t return on time, but I believe he’s still part of Gernot Rohr’s plans.” He told brila.net.

In the absence of the former Enyimba international and Katsina United goalkeeper, Rohr handed invitations to young goalkeepers Maduka Okoye, Dele Alampasu, and Matthew Yakubu for the game against Tunisia and Algeria, however, Ike insisted that Ezenwa is still in the mix and his experience is still needed in the squad.

“Ezenwa is the only experience goalkeeper in the squad at the moment and he understands African football as well, so he could be back once the league return,” Ike concluded.
