Liverpool have booked their place in the final of the Champions League for the first time in 11 years despite falling to a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Roma in the second leg of their semi-final.

Liverpool took a commanding 5-2 lead to Rome from the first leg, but they were forced to hold off some heavy Roma pressure in the second half to eventually go through 7-6 on aggregate.

First-half away goals from Sadio Mane and Wijnaldum placed Liverpool on a higher ground until the home teams came through with four goals in the encounter.

Mane opened scores for Liverpool at the 9th minute, a brilliant assist from Firmino birthed the first goal of the night during the Champions League showdown in Rome.

Roma replied with an equaliser in the 15th minute. A bizarre own goal off James Milner favoured the host club and they went level with Liverpool with a 1-1 scoreline.

Liverpool missed a brilliant chance at the 25th minute. Robertson’s pass led to Mane’s strike at the 18-yard box which was saved by the goalkeeper and it led to a corner-kick.

The encounter ended in a 4-2 scoreline as Roma late at home, but it was in favour of Liverpool who qualified for the finals in Kyiv with a 7-6 scoreline in goal aggregate.

Liverpool will now play Real Madrid in Kiev on May 26, because they got it right. They knew what they were best at, they knew what they had to do.
