Senegal records Africa’s first victory in Qatar 2022

The Terranga Lions of Senegal become the first African side to win a match at the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup, after beating hosts Qatar 3-1 on Friday.

The African Champions are condemned to win against the hosts after losing their first Group game 2-0 to the Netherlands.

Boulaye Dia was voted as the man of the match as the African Champions rekindled their hope of reaching the round of 16, with a 3-1 victory at the Al Thumama Stadium.

Diedhiou got Senegal’s second when he headed a ball back behind him and into the top corner, nine minutes after Dia smashed home the opening it in from relatively close range.

Ismaeel Mohammed reduced the deficit for the hosts after latching onto a lovely cross-field long ball and crossing it into the box for Muntari to head it in.

Senegal got their third in the 83rd minute when Bamba Dieng met a ball into the box with a hard, low shot as Qatar’s defense goes missing.

A good result for the Lions of Teranga in their game against Ecuador on Tuesday could see them advance to the last 16 of the World Cup.

Africa has not had success in recent times. The last time that the continent had a nation in the quarter-finals was when Ghana reached the last eight in 2010.
