Sevilla sporting director, Víctor Orta has thrown his support behind Nigerian striker Akor Adams, who continues to struggle with injury setbacks since his January move.
Signed from Montpellier in the winter transfer window for €5.5 million, Adams arrived with high expectations after an impressive stint in Ligue 1.
Sevilla’s decision to let compatriot Kelechi Iheanacho leave on loan further underlined their belief in the 25-year-old forward.
However, Adams has had a frustrating start to life at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. He has made just four La Liga appearances and has been sidelined twice due to recurring muscle injuries.
His latest setback ruled him out of Sevilla’s 1-0 defeat to Valencia and is likely to keep him out for the remainder of the season.
The persistent fitness issues have raised questions about his ability to cope with the demands of Spanish football and whether Sevilla can count on him in the long term.
Speaking during the unveiling of new head coach Joaquín Caparrós, the Sevilla chief expressed sympathy for Adams and reassured fans that the club is handling the situation carefully.
“What Akor has suffered has been unfortunate,” Orta said. “But we will study why these injuries occurred. We have a lot of confidence in him.”
Adams was initially named in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, but he was ultimately omitted from the final 23-man list due to his injury.
With his season likely over, the Nigerian forward will now turn his attention toward recovering fully and preparing for the next campaign.
The coming months could be crucial in determining his future at the club. Should fitness issues persist, Sevilla may be forced to consider loaning him out or moving him on to make room for a more reliable option up front.
