Signing for Liverpool shaped my career – Awoniyi

Union Berlin’s Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi says he signed for Liverpool without proper understanding about work permit.

Awoniyi joined the Kops in 2015 after a successful FIFA U17 World Cup with the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria.

The gangling striker would spend six years with the Merseyside giants but failed to make a single professional appearance.

Awoniyi was not granted a work permit by the UK authority and was subsequently loaned to the team in Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany.

Awoniyi finally left Liverpool last summer — joining Union Berlin in a £6.5m deal.

Reflecting on the decision to sign for Liverpool, The 24-year-old stated, that he has no regret over the decision, but signed for them when he didn’t understand the nitty-gritty of work-permit.

“I signed for Liverpool at a period in my young career as a footballer; when I did not understand how it works with work permit issues, but at the end, we are still here talking about it.

“It shows that I did not make a bad decision to sign for Liverpool. With other players, they can have a work permit immediately.

“I will simply tell any young Nigerian player to just pray and let God lead him throughout his journey irrespective of the choice or the decision he will eventually make.

“I have always said that Liverpool is one of the best things that happened to me as a footballer because they gave me the platform to achieve my dream and with them, I have no regret at all.” He told Tribalfootball.com

The Super Eagles star has scored 12 goals in 17 appearances, including seven goals in the Bundesliga.
