Minister of sports and youth development, Sunday Dare has praised the female basketball national team D’Tigress for securing a spot in 2020 Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
The Nigerian basketball team recorded a 74-59victory against Mali in the semi-final of the Pre-WOQT on Sunday in Maputo to book their placein the WOQT.
Minister Dare was however impressed with performance of the team and he took to his verified Twitter handle to applaud their efforts.
“Congratulations to D’Tigress for overrunning Mali 74-59 to qualify for the next Olympics window.”
Nigeria will now compete in the 16-team WOQT from February 6 to 9, 2020.
Belgium (Ostend), China (Foshan), France (Bourges) and Serbia (Belgrade) have been awarded the hosting rights of the WOQTs.
The 16 teams will be split into four groups, who will then battle for spots at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
14 teams will vie for medals in the Women’s Basketball event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Host Japan and World Champion USA have qualified automatically.
