Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali has made an unexpected choice when asked about the best goalkeeper in the world.

Rather than naming one of the elite European shot-stoppers, Nwabali singled out a fellow African goalkeeper, South Africa’s Ronwen Williams.

Nwabali and Williams both impressed during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, delivering standout performances for their respective nations.

Williams etched his name in AFCON history by becoming the first goalkeeper to save four penalties in a single match, guiding South Africa to the semi-finals after a goalless draw against Cape Verde.

However, the semi-final clash between South Africa and Nigeria offered another thrilling chapter. With the game ending in a 1-1 draw, Nigerian fans were anxious, given Williams’ remarkable penalty-saving record.

But this time, it was Nwabali who rose to the occasion, saving two penalties to send Nigeria into the final.

In an interview with iDiski Times on Tuesday, Nwabali spoke highly of Williams, naming him as the world’s best goalkeeper.

“I really see him as the best goalkeeper in the world. He really inspires me with how he plays, and I’m not surprised to see him on the list of nominees of the best goalkeepers in the world,” Nwabali said.

He went on to praise Williams’ performances beyond AFCON, highlighting his consistency at both the international and club levels.

“Ronwen Williams did really well and not only at the AFCON but at club level as well,” Nwabali added.

Despite Nwabali’s own impressive tournament—keeping four clean sheets—Williams edged him out for the Best Goalkeeper Award at AFCON.

That success wasn’t just for his country but also for his club side, Mamelodi Sundowns.

He played a crucial role in helping the team secure their seventh consecutive league title and the inaugural African Football League trophy.

Williams’ stellar year earned him a nomination for the prestigious Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d’Or, recognizing his achievements for both club and country.
