Super Eagles End 2024 Ranked 44th Globally, 5th in Africa

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have concluded 2024 ranked 44th in the world, according to the final FIFA World Rankings released this month.

This marks no change from their November position but reflects a sharp decline compared to the beginning of the year when they were ranked 28th globally.

A Rollercoaster Year

The Super Eagles played 15 matches in 2024, securing nine wins, four draws, and suffering five losses.

While their record might seem respectable, inconsistent performances, particularly in the crucial World Cup qualifiers, have defined their year and impacted their global standing.

The team’s troubles reached a tipping point in November, when they dropped eight spots, the steepest fall of any nation in that FIFA ranking cycle slipping from 36th to 44th.

The decline was triggered by a frustrating 1-1 draw away to Benin, followed by a shocking 2-1 home loss to Rwanda in Uyo during the concluding games of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Though Nigeria’s qualification for the tournament was never in doubt, the poor results left a dent in their global reputation and points tally.

This downturn comes in stark contrast to the optimism at the start of the year, following Nigeria’s strong showing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they reached the final before losing narrowly to host nation Côte d’Ivoire.

Continental Rankings: Morocco Still Africa’s King

While Nigeria held steady as Africa’s fifth-best team, the top four positions remained unchanged:

1. Morocco- 14th globally
2. Senegal- 17th globally
3. Egypt- 33rd globally
4. Algeria- 37th globally

Ivory Coast (46th), Cameroon (49th), Mali (51st), Tunisia (52nd), and South Africa (57th) rounded out Africa’s top 10, all maintaining their rankings from November.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As the Super Eagles prepare for World Cup qualification in 2025, there is a clear need to address the inconsistencies that have plagued them this year. Regaining form and climbing the rankings will be crucial to ensure Nigeria secure a ticket to the world cup in 2026.

With the new year comes new opportunities, and the Super Eagles will be eager to turn the page on a turbulent 2024.
