Russia’s shock penalty shootout victory over Spain has blown open this side of the knockout draw, with one of England, Colombia, Croatia, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland certain to reach the final on July 15.
Spain’s defeat ensures that at least one of this year’s finalists will not have reached the title decider for half a century – if at all – and will give the Swiss and the Swedes a timely boost with both sides confident of winning to set up a quarter-final against either England or Colombia.
