Super Eagles player Nathan Tella is making a statement in Germany, and he hopes his performances will earn him another shot with the Nigeria national team.
The Bayer Leverkusen winger has been a consistent presence in Xabi Alonso’s squad this season, finally getting the minutes to prove himself at the top level.
But while his club career is flourishing, his international ambitions remain unfulfilled.
The 25-year-old last received a call-up in March 2024 under Finidi George for international friendlies against Ghana and Mali, but he remained an unused substitute in both matches.
Now, with Eric Chelle taking charge and crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe looming in March, Tella is eager to work his way back into the squad.
“I Must Earn My Place” – Tella on Super Eagles Hopes

After scoring in Leverkusen’s 2-0 UEFA Champions League win over Sparta Prague, Tella spoke to journalist Oma Akatugba, making it clear that he isn’t expecting any handouts.
“This is not for me to say. Like I said, I’ve never been a player that says ‘I should be called up.’
On merit, I have to work hard and earn my chances. If the new coach [Eric Chelle] thinks I’ve done enough, then I’d happily accept the call. But if not, that means I have to work harder.”
His words reflect a grounded approach, knowing nothing is guaranteed, especially with Chelle implementing a fresh selection policy as Nigeria can’t afford to miss out on another world cup.
With fierce competition in the Super Eagles’ attacking ranks, Tella understands the importance of standing out. But for him, the motivation is clear representing Nigeria is an honor he doesn’t take lightly.
“Yes, of course, it is an honour to play for your country. Many dream of playing with the best players in the country. Every opportunity I get to represent them [Super Eagles], I will give my 100%. So hopefully, I can do the right things here and get the recognition at home.”
Tella’s commitment on the pitch is evident. He has featured in 25 matches across all competitions for Leverkusen this season, contributing three goals and three assists.
A Crucial Few Months Ahead
As Nigeria prepares for must-win qualifiers in March, every strong performance could edge Tella closer to a recall.
His Super Eagles journey began in November 2023, when he made his debut against Zimbabwe in a 1-1 draw under José Peseiro.
