Nigerian Five-time All African games Table Tennis Gold Medallist Offiong Edem has called the need for more encouraging comments and action towards Nigerian Athletes.
The 34-year-old Offiong Edem who in Table Tennis defeated her Hungarian Counterpart Madarasz before losing out to United States’ Zhang in round 2 at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games when asked about how athletes cope with the pressure from Nigerians in a chat with Brila.net stated that the pressure, criticism and condemnation athletes face in Nigeria is really bad some times when athletes don’t do well in tournaments they need to be encouraged.
She added Some times When an athlete loses the people out there will say some things that if an athlete is not very strong mentally, such athlete might start thinking otherwise because they don’t know what athletes go through.
She also pointed out the possible fact that in the mind of an athlete going into a tournament, there could be concerns of the criticisms such athlete might face from some Nigerian fans and the federation affects the athletes.
She urged for more support and encouragement for Nigerian athletes from the federation and also the Nigerian fans.
