There is still hope for NPFL stars under Eguavoen — Ikhana

Former Super Eagles player Kadiri Ikhana has offered support to Austin Eguavoen following the criticisms he received from the media and the fans over his recent squad selection.

While the Nigeria Professional Football League players were left out of Eguavoen’s squad, the 55-year-old handed likes of Ogenyi Onazi, Ahmed Musa and Odion Ighalo place in the team for the crucial forthcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Ghana.

The decision was not well received by some section of the media and the followers of team. They believed Eguavoen wasn’t fair to the players.

And in a chat with brila.net, Ikhana who helped Nigeria win her first ever African Cup of Nations crown stated that, Eguavoen needs to be left alone to do his job and use the players he wants.

“I think you can’t replace the trees that have been planted for so many years with another ones and you think, they’ll grow like that”.

“Eguavoen should be given time , he can’t just invite new set of players and start over again. He has to work with what he has now .”

The former Enyimba of Aba handler added that, there is still hope for the NPFL boys under Eguavoen.

“The qualifiers is very close, but I’m sure he will look into the local league, after the qualifiers. So there is hope for them” he told brila.net.

The Super Eagles will tackle the Black Stars of Ghana for a place in Qatar 2022 . The first leg will take place at the Cape Coast Stadium on March 25 while the second leg takes place at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on March 29.
