Former Nigerian midfield star Austin Okocha insists that Morocco’s victory over Spain was not a fluke, saying the North Africans were the better side.

Morocco on Tuesday dumped Spain out of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar joining Senegal, Cameroon, and Ghana as the only African sides to reach the last eight.

Morocco won via penalty shootout, and will face Portugal for a place in the last four of the competition.

And Speaking on the performance, Okocha insist the win is a big boost for African football, saying the continent should have one more slot in the next edition in 2026.

“It’s all about Africa. We’ve got a team in the quarter finals which perhaps gives us maybe a better slot in the next World Cup.

“You want to see an African team progress and we’re happy that Morocco is through – and respect because of the way they did it.

Okocha also questioned the approach of Luis Enrique’s side to the game, saying they achieved nothing with their passing game football.

“How can you have 21% possession and two shots? Spain had over 70% and one shot on target. It shows organization, it shows discipline, it shows how to play to your strengths. Deservedly they won the game. Well deserved,” Okocha concluded.
