Troost-Ekong scores own goal in Watford win over Derby

Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong scored an own goal on his return to Watford starting eleven on Friday night.

Ekong was reinstated back to the lineup for the visit of Derby County after sitting on the bench for the mid-week away victory at Preston North End.

The 27-year-old played all the minutes and gave a good of himself as he helped his team 2 – 1 over Wayne Rooney’s led at the Vicarage Road.

Goals from Joao Pedro and Will Hughes put the Xisco Munoz’s Hornets in perfect control of the match, but the initiative was handed over to the visitors after Troost-Ekong who was having a good game made a mistake a the back

The Hornets were a few minutes away from another impressive clean sheet before Troost-Ekong turned Nathan Byrne’s cross into his own net to reduce the deficit late on.

The own goal changed the complexion of the match as Derby piled on the pressure and they almost snatched late equalizer from Byrne’s corner but it was kept out by a combination of the woodwork and goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann.

Watford held off a late fightback from Derby to win 2-1 and moved level on points with second-placed Brentford.
