U17WWC: Flamingos edges European Champions Germany in a nervy affair to pick bronze medal

Nigeria ended the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup campaign in style, beating Germany 3-2 on penalties to win the Bronze medal at the DY Patil Stadium.

The Flamingos came into their last match of the tournament in Navi Mumbai, hoping to banish the disappointment of the defeat to Colombia last Friday.

The team did just that as they went in front in side the opening 20 minutes. Opeyemi Ajakaye gave the Flamingos the lead, breaking her goal drought in the process.

It became 2-0 in the 48th minutes, thanks to a brilliant header from Amina Bello who connected perfectly with a corner.

Etim Edidiong who replaced Chidera Okenwa scored the third for the Flamingos three minutes after hour mark.

The Germans however failed to bow down as they scored thrice in the last 14 minutes to take the game to penalty shootout.

Jella Viet effort made it 3-1 in the 73rd minute, then Platiner Paulina got the second in the 88th minute.

The comeback was completed in the stoppage time as Loreen Bender levelled matters.

The Flamingos however held their nerves in the penalty shootout to win 3-2 and claimed the third place in the process.

Bankole Olowookere girls became the second African side to achieve the feat.
