UEFA copies FIFA Fourth substitute rule ahead of new Champions League season

UEFA have announced that, like FIFA at the World Cup in Russia, teams will be allowed to use an extra substitution in next season’s Champions League knockout games – if matches go to extra time.

The Nigerian duo of Kayode Olanrewaju and Moses Ekpai could line up for Shakhtar Donetsk and Viktoria Plzeň, respectively, in the 2018-19 UCL season.

Should the clubs progress to the latter stages of the competition, they will be able to call upon an extra substitute if their second legs go past 90 minutes.

FIFA adopted the same rule during this summer’s World Cup, allowing sides to bring on a fourth outfield substitute in extra time.

The rule will also be in place for the UEFA Europa League, Super Cup, European Championship in 2020 and Women’s competitions.
