Union Berlin Chief laments Awoniyi’s exit

FC Union Berlin, Sporting Director Oliver Ruhnert, has admitted that Taiwo Awoniyi’s exit left a big vacuum in the squad.

Awoniyi completed his £17.5m transfer to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, a season after signing permanently with Alte Försterei’s side.

In the 2020/21 Bundesliga season the Nigerian scored 15 goals and immortalized himself as the sixth Bundesliga top scorer in 2021/22.

Overall, the Forward played 65 competitive games for the Irons, scored 25 goals and nine assists, recorded a scorer point in about every second game.

“It was clear that a player like Taiwo would attract the attention of other clubs with his performances,” Oliver Ruhnert said.

“He is a great loss for our team, both in terms of sport and as a person, which we now have to absorb. But we wish Taiwo all the best on his further path and thank him for his performance in the jersey of 1. FC Union Berlin.”
