USA 94, one of the biggest highlights of my football career – Adepoju

Former Nigeria international, Mutiu Adepoju said playing for Nigeria at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA remains one of his greatest achievements of all his football career.

Mutiu Adepoju was a member of the Super Eagles squad that qualified for the FIFA world cup for the first time in 1994 and also went on to reach the knock out phase.

It would be recalled that the Super Eagles defeated Bulgaria and Greece in their opening two group games, before suffering a narrow defeat against the Albacete of Argentina in their last group game.

The Clemens Westerhoff tutored side were also a few minutes away from reaching the last eight, but a dramatic late comeback from the Roberto Baggio led Italians ended their fairytale run in the USA.

However, Sunday marks the 26th anniversary of the country’s maiden appearance at the Mundial and Nigeria’s famous 3 – 0 thrashing of Bulgaria in the opening game.

Adepoju revealed through his social media handle that he’s delighted to be a member of the squad that made history at the global football showpiece.

“On this day 26 years ago, I made history with Nigeria to feature in the country’s maiden World Cup game,”

“The icing on the cake was a 3-0 victory over Bulgaria. This is no doubt one of the biggest highlights of my career as a footballer and I will never forget this day.” He said in a tweet.

Adepoju was also a member of the squad to the 1998 and 2002 World Cups staged in France and South Korea and Japan respectively.

The 1994 African cup of Nations winner scored his solitary world cup goal in Nigeria’s 3 – 2 win over Spain in France 98.
