WAFCON: Super Falcons can handle title Pressure – Oshoala

Asisat Oshoala has refuted claims that the Super Falcons are under pressure to defend their African Women’s Championship crown in Morocco.

The Falcons, who are defending Champions, will kick off in the the group stages against South Africa’s Banyana Banyana.

Desiree Ellis’ side are also considered a strong contender for the Championship in Morocco and have a decent record against Nigeria heading into Monday’s group C opener.

Nigeria will also face Botswana on July 7 and complete the first round of matches with the game against Burundi on July 10.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Oshoala said Nigeria’s priority is to qualify for the World Cup.

“The mentality of the team is to win the trophy, but we have to get the World Cup ticket first which is very important to us as Nation. We want to go there and showcase our talents,” the Forward stated.

As the WAFCON in Morocco will also serve as the FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers for next year’s edition, the four semi-finalists will secure automatic places in the global Championship holding in Australia & New Zealand.

Asked if the team is under pressure to win the WAFCON again, the Barcelona Forward said.

“Yes the 10th AWCON title story is beautiful, but if you are at the level of Falcons, you’ll understand what responsibility is, because everyone expects us to win.

“Yeah, I get the pressure part, but I’m sure we can handle it as a team,” She concluded.
