Why New Super Eagles Invitee Felix Agu Won’t Make His Debut Yet

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle has extended a training invitation to Werder Bremen full-back Felix Agu ahead of the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in London.

Agu is expected to join the Super Eagles camp, but he won’t be making his debut just yet and here’s why.

Chelle recently unveiled a 26-man squad for the Unity Cup, alongside a 21-player list for an international friendly against Russia in June.

However, notable absentees from both rosters include star forwards Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Alex Iwobi.

The player’s invitation will be limited to training sessions only, as he is currently ineligible to feature in official matches due to unresolved documentation.

According to German outlet Die DeichStube, bureaucratic delays have held up his switch of international allegiance.

Born in Osnabrück, Germany, Agu featured twice for the German U-21 national team in 2019.

However, he remains eligible to play for Nigeria, having not made a senior appearance for Die Mannschaft .

The versatile defender can operate at both right-back and left-back and is also comfortable as a wide midfielder or defensive anchor on either flank.

In the 2024–25 Bundesliga season, Agu scored three goals in 22 appearances and earned a unique stat: he won more penalties (three) than any other player in the German top flight, according to Squawka.

The 25 year-old has previously expressed his desire to represent Nigeria:

“To play on the national level was always a dream of mine, and I had to make half of the decision already because I played for the German under-21 team,” he told Oma Sports in March 2025.

“I did this to kind of keep this open, but I’ve talked a lot to Justin Njimah about playing for the national team, and we think it would be like a dream come true to play for Nigeria.

“Also, it would put a smile on our fathers’ faces if we represent Nigeria.”

Nigeria will kick off their Unity Cup campaign against Ghana on May 28 at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago also participating in the four-nation invitational.
