The Warriors of Zimbabwe will hold their first training session Today morning as they gear up to face Nigeria’s Super Eagles on matchday 6 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Uyo on Tuesday.
The Zimbabwean delegation, consisting of players and officials, arrived in Nigeria on Saturday, just a few hours after the Super Eagles returned from their victorious trip to Rwanda.
Led by the Vice President of their country’s football association, Kennedy Ndebele, the 45-man delegation was welcomed at the airport by the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Football Association, Samuel Umoh, alongside officials from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Zimbabwe Yet to Win in Qualifiers
After five matches in Group C, Zimbabwe remains winless, having recorded three draws and two losses. Their most recent outing saw them come from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against Benin.
The Warriors currently sit at the bottom of the group with three points, while Nigeria, following their crucial 2-0 win over Rwanda, moved up to fourth place with six points.
A History of Nigeria vs. Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe’s last visit to Nigeria for a World Cup qualifier dates back to October 2005, during the final group game for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The Super Eagles secured a dominant 5-1 victory in Abuja, but it wasn’t enough to earn qualification, as Angola finished ahead of them in the standings.
Financial Boost for Zimbabwe’s Players
As an added motivation, the Zimbabwean government has promised each player a $150,000 (approximately N300 million) reward for a victory over Nigeria.
This follows a similar financial incentive ahead of their match against Benin, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
With the stakes high and both teams desperate for points, all eyes will be on Uyo as the Super Eagles look to build momentum, while Zimbabwe fights for their first win in the campaign.
