Yusuf Alhassan credits Van Bommel for his fine form

Nigerian midfielder Yusuf Alhassan says he’s enjoying his season with Royal Antwerp and has credited his manager Mark Van Bommel for his fine form.

Alhassan Yusuf struggled in his first season at the club, following his arrival from Swedish side IFK Gothenborg.

The 22-year-old midfielder however hit the ground running in the 2022/23 league season with impressive performances.

The Nigerian has now become one of the key figures for the club, featuring in all Royal Antwerp’s games, but one this season.

While commenting on unexpected playing time, Alhassan Yusuf attributed his change of fortune to his manager, who integrated him into the squad.

The midfielder added that he’s happy playing under the manager because e is more focused on a ball-playing midfielder than a physical presence.

Yusuf told De Zondag as reported by voetbalkrant: “I think about the coach because the other players are still there. The system has changed and the way of playing has also changed.

“Every coach comes with instructions about how he wants to play and how he sees you as a player. Van Bommel talks to me a lot. Every day. He’s trying to give me information that makes it really easy for me in the matches.”

Van Bommel, a former Barcelona, and Bayern Munich midfielder was hired in May 2022 and has quickly transformed the club into a league title contender this season.
