2019 Afcon Qualifier: We’ll Upset Nigeria in Uyo – Itumelenge Khune

2019 Afcon Qualifier: We’ll Upset Nigeria in Uyo – Itumelenge Khune

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune has shot a warning to the Super Eagles, vowing “We’re more than prepared to come and upset Nigeria”.

Khune, 29, is Stuart Baxter’s first choice for the 2019 Afcon qualifying match on Saturday as the Group E heavyweights clash in Uyo.

The Kaizer Chiefs shot stopper, who has 78 caps for Bafana, is not new to this battle or grounds. He was in goal for South Africa three years ago in the two-legged tie against Nigeria in the 2015 Afcon qualifiers.

Bafana stopped Nigeria from reaching the tournament in Equatorial Guinea – the wounds still fresh – after a 2-2 draw in Uyo in the final qualifying match.

Khune admits the head to head tie has been one-sided, but is confident the training and hard work put in can turn the tide on Saturday.

“We’ve played Nigeria so many times. If I recall I’ve met them twice and we drew twice here in Nigeria and in South Africa. We had a great match and we’re looking forward to this match.

“Both teams have been preparing very well and we’re looking forward to entertaining our people.

“We haven’t won a competitive match against Nigeria, but this coming Saturday will be a different ball game. We’re more than prepared to come and upset Nigeria in their own country. But it will take a lot of hard work, determination and of course taking our chances after creating them.

“All the players are fit. Yes when we came we had seven injuries, but now everyone is fine, we’ve been training and everyone is fit and looking forward to the match,” Khune told brila.net
