Abia Warriors thrash Sunshine Stars to record first win of the season

Abia Warriors put an end to their winless run in the 2020-2021 NPFL season with a 4 – 1 thrashing of Sunshine Stars in Okigwe on Wednesday.

Warriors got off to a flying start inside the opening 16 minutes as Fatai Abdullahi curled in a perfect free kick from the edge of the area.

The hosts added a second, minutes later this time it was Emmanuel Ugwuka who headed home from yet another free kick.

Abia Warriors went into the break with a two-goal advantage for the first time this season.

Sunshine Stars reduced the deficit in the 60th minute after league top scorer Sodiq Yusuf scored from Seun Olulayo’s cross.

It was the third time both players are combining for a goal this season.

Sunshine Stars’ hope of a come back hit the rock when substitute, Bello Lukman restored Abia Warriors two goals advantage in the 66th.

Bello Lukman rose the highest to head home a corner kick taken by Mustapha Jibreel.

Bello completed his brace in the 78th minute as he brilliantly smashed home a rebound after Sunshine goalkeeper David Ariyo had superbly denied Godwin Obaje from point blank range.

The victory is the first for Abia Warriors over Sunshine Stars in their last nine NPFL meetings and also the first win for Imama Amapakabo against Gbenga Ogunbote in their last four meetings.
