Arokodare undaunted by abuses from Anderlecht fans

Genk striker Tolu Arokodare has revealed that he continues to receive abusive messages in Belgium due to his unexpected decision to join Genk after almost finalizing a move to Anderlecht during the January transfer window.

Arokodare believes section of Anderlecht fans are still upset over his choice to snub their club for Genk, especially after completing his medical assessment with them.

The striker received hostile reception during Genk’s 1-1 draw against Anderlecht on Sunday, but Arokodare appeared to silence his critics after netting the equalizing goal.

The Nigerian striker came off the bench to secure a late draw for Genk with his first league goal of the season and celebrated the goal with a wave, which Anderlecht fans interpreted as disrespectful.

The gesture dominated the Belgian media, with pundits having a goal at the lanky forward.

However, Arokodare took to social media on Monday and clarifiedthat his celebration was not meant as a disrespect to the opposingteam and their fans, but rather to those who have been sending himabusive messages since he moved to the Cegeka Arena in January.

“Great team effort. Great support from the fans. My celebration was a reply to all the nonstop hate, insults, messages, comments, and bad wishes I received ever since the transfer, my injury, and even during the warm-up for the game,” he stated.

“I didn’t mean to offend or disrespect anyone with it. It was just a harmless wave celebration.” He said.

Arokodare has scored two goals across all competitions this season.
