Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi has drawn level with Egypt’s Mohamed Salah for the second-most Premier League appearances by an African international.
Iwobi now moves closer to breaking a record held by former Ivory Coast defender, Kolo Touré.
The 30-year-old reached the milestone after making his 328th Premier League appearance in Fulham’s 1–0 victory over Coventry City on Saturday.
Iwobi now shares second place with Liverpool forward Salah, while Touré remains the African player with the most appearances in the competition.
The Fulham midfielder needs another 26 appearances to surpass Touré and become the African international with the most Premier League appearances in history.
Already Nigeria’s leading appearance-maker in the competition, Iwobi continues to strengthen his place among the most enduring African players to have featured in English football’s top flight.
Iwobi Closes in on Touré’s African Record
Iwobi’s latest appearance brought him level with Salah on 328 Premier League matches, leaving the Nigerian with one major record in sight.
Yaya Touré leads the African appearance rankings with 353 games, having represented Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool during his Premier League career.
With 328 appearances to his name, Iwobi needs 25 more games to equal Touré’s total and 26 to claim the record outright.
The Nigerian has maintained his consistency across spells with Arsenal, Everton and Fulham, establishing himself as one of the most experienced African players in the competition.
Salah, meanwhile, has also built an impressive Premier League record during his time at Liverpool, placing him alongside Iwobi in second position among African internationals.
Iwobi’s achievement highlights his longevity in English football, having spent more than a decade competing in the Premier League.
From Arsenal Debut to Fulham Milestone
Alex Iwobi’s Premier League journey began on October 31, 2015, when he came off the bench for Arsenal in a 3–0 victory over Swansea City.
His latest appearance came shortly before the 11th anniversary of that debut, another significant moment in a career that has seen him become one of Nigeria’s most established players in England.
The midfielder made his first Premier League start in March 2016 and marked the occasion with a goal as Arsenal defeated Everton 2–0 at Goodison Park.
In 2019, Iwobi moved to Everton, where he continued to build his appearance tally before returning to London to join Fulham in September 2023.
His time at Fulham has proved another important chapter in his career.
The midfielder surpassed former Nigeria international Shola Ameobi’s record of 298 Premier League appearances by a Nigerian.
Iwobi has since extended that record and now stands among the leading African players in the competition’s history.
NFF Hails Iwobi as Touré Record Comes Into View
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has celebrated Iwobi’s achievement, with acting general secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme identifying Touré’s record as the midfielder’s next target.
"The NFF celebrates Alex Iwobi for this new achievement and we wish him even greater glory," Ikpeme said in a federation statement.
"We will be very happy to see him become the African with the most appearances in the Premier League in the near future."
The federation’s message tells the significance of Iwobi’s achievement for Nigerian football, with the midfielder now within reach of a record held by one of Africa’s most accomplished Premier League defenders.
If he maintains his current level of involvement at Fulham, Iwobi will have an opportunity to become the competition’s outright African appearance leader.
Fulham Continue Winning Run as Bobb Scores Against Coventry
Iwobi’s landmark appearance came as Fulham secured a 1–0 victory over Coventry City, extending their winning run in the Premier League to two matches.
Oscar Bobb scored the decisive goal against Coventry, following Fulham’s previous 1–0 victory over Hull City.
Iwobi had played a starring role in that earlier win, scoring the only goal of the match to secure all three points for Fulham.
The consecutive victories provided a positive backdrop to the Nigerian’s latest milestone, as he continued to contribute to his club while closing in on Touré’s appearance record.
African Premier League Appearance Rankings
Iwobi’s achievement places him ahead of several other prominent African players who have enjoyed lengthy careers in the Premier League.
Ghana international, Jordan Ayew and Ivory Coast forward, Wilfried Zaha have each made 305 appearances, while Ameobi finished his career with 298 matches.
