Awaziem unable to stop Ansu Fati as Leganes fail Barcelona test

Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem featured for the complete duration in CD Leganes’ 2-0 away loss to Barcelona at Camp Nou on Tuesday.

Chidozie Awaziem who has now started both games since La Liga returned, had a game to forget as he struggled to curtail 17 years old Ansu Fati all night.

While Awaziem and other defenders were struggling to limit the threats posed by Lionel Messi, Ansu Fati, and Antoine Griezman, Leganes on the part had two big chances to take the lead but squandered both of them.

At the other end, Ansu Fati won Barcelona free kick in the vital area when he skipped past Awaziem on the right, only for the Nigerian to fouled the 17-year-old, but Leganes dealt with Messi’s dangerous free-kick perfectly.

Late in the first, Chidozie Awaziem could nothing as Fati later put Barcelona in front with a fine finish after connecting with a pass from Junior Firpo on the left.

Barcelona scored again early in the second half, when Griezman left Awaziem behind and tapped into an empty net after latching onto a low cross from Ansu Fati, however, the goal was ruled out for offside.

Barcelona won’t be denied the second, Lionel Messi converted a penalty for his 21st league goal of the season.

While Awaziem struggled all night, his compatriot Kenneth Omeruo watched the entire minutes of game from the bench.
