Balogun, Aribo help Rangers reach Europa League knock out Phase

Leon Balogun and Joe Aribo featured for Glasgow Rangers in their Europa league win over Belgian side Standard Liege on Thursday as The Gers booked their place in the round of 32.

Balogun was given the nod to start the game by Coach Steven Gerrard and the Nigerian international went on to play all 90 minutes.

 

Aribo on his part, started from the bench, introduced in the 79th minute for Alfredo Morelos.

 

The 25-year-old midfielder is also returning for Rangers after sitting out the last two matches due to illness.

 

Rangers stretched their unbeaten run to 23 games following Thursday’s 3- 2 victory and the result was enough to send them through to the round of 32, with a game to spare.

 

The Belgian visitors, needed a win to keep their hopes of reaching the round of 32 alive, they took an early lead when Maxime Lestienne finished from close range after six minute.

 

Connor Goldson’s header restored parity for Rangers in 39 minute, but Liege regained their lead within a minute as Duje Cop bravely poked home the ball.

 

Rangers reacted again and leveled the score just before half time as James Tavernier converted his ninth penalty of the season.

 

The Gers sealed the comeback in the second half as Scott  Arfield scored the winner from  Ryan Kent’s cross in the 63rd minute.
