WAFU: Benin Republic Coach Confident of Victory against Nigeria

Benin assistant coach Vizir Toure says Nigeria will be tough opponents in today’s 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations semifinal, but he is backing his team to defeat the Super Eagles.

Benin secured their place in the final four of the ongoing WAFU tournament with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Niger on Tuesday evening.

It was no walk in the park for the Squirrels, even though they enjoyed a two-man numerical advantage for most of the game.

In the end, goals from Rodrigue Fassinou and Jules Elegbede secured the three points for Benin, who leapfrogged to the top of Group B and set up a WAFU semifinal clash with Nigeria.

“I congratulate Niger for today’s performance because they made things very difficult for us even with nine men, this shows how strong teams have fared in this tournament,” said Toure after the match.

“The good thing is we also got we wanted, we had the all-important win, we played well and deserved what we got from the game.”

Toure added that his team is out to make a name for themselves and taking on heavyweights like Nigeria is the only way they will move up in the football world.

“Big game for us, big game for them,” he said in regards to the semi against the Super Eagles.

“If you want to be recognized as a good team you have to beat the best and we are ready to face Nigeria.

“We know it is going to be tough but we also have what it takes to beat them.”

The Benin v Nigeria semifinals will be played at Cape Coast Sports Stadium.
