Dessers speaks about decision to leave Genk

Cyriel Dessers said he decided to seek a loan move to Feyenoord from KRC Genk, because of playing time.

The striker struggled for playing time last season, and was the back up striker for first choice Paul Onuachu.

Despite the little playing time, Dessers managed to score seven goals and helped the qualify for the UEFA Champions League and won the Belgian Cup.

The Belgian born striker started the campaign with Genkies, but opted to leave before the end of the window when his situation didn’t improve.

Although, he wasn’t a guaranteed starter at Feyenoord Rotterdam Cyriel Dessers , but he has played more minutes, than last season at Genk.

Speaking with PlaySports, Dessers says, hinted that he didn’t want to leave Genk, but he was forced to prioritize his development and seek playing time elsewhere.

“Especially last season I put the team interests above my own,” said Dessers . “I said to myself: I would rather sit on the bench with a team that takes the title or that finishes second and wins the cup, than with a team that finishes fifth or sixth.”

And I had an important role in the dressing room. I can say, “Guys, don’t count on me anymore.” But I’m not like that.”

“During the play-offs I went to technical director Dimitri de Condé at some point. I said: “It’s done for me, really. There were still three games left. I told him: “For me it is it closed”.

I still scored three times in those three last matches.” He said.
