Ekong out of AFCON Qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe

Defender William Ekong has been ruled out of Nigeria’s 2023 AFCON qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe due to a groin injury.

The Watford defender injured his groin during Super Eagles clash with Sierra Leone in Abuja on Thursday.

Ekong slipped due to the state of pitch and injured himself in the process, before being substituted.

The 27-year-old has now flown out to London to start treatment in preparation for the upcoming season with Watford.

With the CB out of the clash, Jose Peseiro could turn his attention to Kenneth Omeruo who came on as a substitute against the Leone Stars.

The Super Eagles are expected to leave Abuja for Agadir, Morocco on Sunday.
