Fortune Omoniwari’s winner maintains Rivers United perfect start to the season

Rivers United continued their impressive start to the 2020-2021 Nigeria professional football league season with a 1-0 over Abia Warriors on Saturday.

Fortune Omoniwari scored the all important goal in the first half to hand Rivers United the maximum points at the Aba Township stadium.

Rivers United coach, Stanley Eguma made six changes from the team that defeated Rangers international last Wednesday, while coach Imama Amapakabo of Abia Warriors kept faith with the same team that started the defeat at Enyimba.

After early exchange between both teams, it was Rivers United who scored the decisive goal in the 28th minute, in form forward, Fortune Omoniwari latched onto a pass from Stephen Gopey and fired the ball past Ojo Olorunleke in goal for Abia Warriors.

With the strike, Omoniwari who also scored the winner against Enugu Rangers last week took his tally for the season to three in all competitions.

The Rivers United could have added the second minutes later, butLookman Binayo’s shot from acute angle landed into the waiting hands of Olorunleke.

Abia Warriors’ first real chance of the game fell to Nzube Anaezemba after the break, but the former Enyimba midfielder could only fire his shot wide.

Abia Warriors were unlucky not to equalise on two different occasions , first, Samson Paul saw his effort saved by Abia Warriorsgoalkeeper Abiodun Akande, while Arit Archibong’s fine drive crashed against the woodwork.

Imama Amakapabo’s men searched in vain for leveler and fell to their second successive defeat in the opening two game of the season.

Rivers United held on for the maximum points, and will now turn their attention to CAF Confederation Cup first round 2nd leg fixtures with Bloemfontein Celtic, slated for Wednesday,6th January 2021.

The match will be played at Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium Omagwa, Rivers State.
