Nigerian midfielder, Papa Daniel has expressed his excitement after receiving his debut call-up to the Super Eagles, admitting he was surprised by the opportunity.
Papa Daniel, 23, was named in Eric Chelle’s 23-man squad for Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

“When I saw the provisional list, I was shocked and when I saw the final list, I was like, ‘Whoa!,’ the Mifielder said in his first interview.
‘I was very, very happy. Thanks to God because it’s not easy for me to be here.’
Daniel, who has been one of the standout players in the NPFL, is eager to prove himself at the international level.
The 23-year-old also spoke about the experience of sharing a camp with some of Nigeria’s biggest stars.
“Seeing the big boys in camp, and it being my first time in the Super Eagles, I am very happy. They’re a motivation for me to do more, to show them what I have, and to be humble.”
Despite being one of the few home-based players in camp, Daniel says the senior players have been welcoming.
“They are all friendly. They encourage us, the home-based players. We never felt like we were not among them,” he said.
“I know we have everything—we have the players who can compete. I just pray for luck. That’s just it—luck.”
Speaking on his chances of getting minutes during this window, the Midfielder expressed optimism.
“I would be very, very happy if I get the chance, and I will show Nigeria and the world who I am and what I can do.”
However, with Nigeria struggling in Group C and in desperate need of a win, his energy and determination could prove useful if given the opportunity.

Nigeria will take on Rwanda on Friday in Kigali before facing Zimbabwe in Uyo on March 25.
The Super Eagles currently sit in fifth place in Group C with just three points, making the upcoming fixtures crucial to their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
