It’s weird playing against Rangers — Bassey

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey admits it was weird playing against Glasgow Rangers.

Bassey was in action for Ajax against his former side, Rangers, few months after departing the Gers in the summer in a £20m move to the Eredivisie outfit.

The 22-year-old was impressive as the Dutch Champions outclassed Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men and won 4-0 at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Speaking after the game, Bassey admitted that though he wants his former Club to win every other week, he was however delighted to help Ajax get off to the perfect start.

He told BT Sport: “I wouldn’t say it was easy for us. We just executed what the manager wanted from us at the right times.

“There is still work to be done for us to get better but we are pleased with the performance and we are getting there.

“I am buzzing but it’s a weird feeling. When I’m not playing against the boys, I wish them all the best.

“I am always rooting for them to win but being on the pitch against them, you need to switch that focus and give 100 percent.

“I am just happy to get the win. I don’t think I will message them straight after the game, I will give them a day.”

The defender applauded the Rangers supporters, while leaving the pitch after the game.
