Iwobi will be part of the winter cavalry Everton require to maintain their title initiative

After just five games of the 2020/2021 Premier League campaign, it is clear that football fans around the world are in for a season like no other. Indeed, it appears that the Premier League is having a shakeup, with the script very much torn up and ready to be rewritten.

Alex Iwobi’s Everton have played a starring role in this season’s Premier League and are one of the leading title contenders so far. Of course, the Premier League odds may suggest otherwise with the Blues at 20/1 to win their first league title since 1987, but with Carlo Ancelotti’s men at the top of the table, all bets have to be off.

Quite simply, the 61-year-old has the Toffees sticking to a game plan that has been so successful for the Italian almost everywhere he has gone on the continent. With domestic titles in Italy, Germany, and England, as well as three Champions League winners medals, Ancelotti is without a doubt a serial winner and has Everton on course for the unthinkable. At the very least, Everton are at 3/1 to qualify for a top-four finish and that would be an achievement just as impressive in many ways.

But now that Ancelotti’s men are top of the table, the blue half of Merseyside will be purely focused on winning the league. Indeed, Evertonians will hope that this sprint out the blocks will gradually turn into a steady canter that sees them cross the line first in the Premier League’s marathon season. To do that, the Toffees will have to utilize their strength in depth over the coming winter months in order to stay ahead of the chasing pack. Undoubtedly, a man that will be called upon as injuries take their toll is Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi.

The attacking midfield has played in four Premier League games so far this season but only in a bit-part role. Iwobi, who showed some beautifully quick feet in a cameo appearance at the end of the 2-2 draw with neighbors Liverpool, has it all to do in order to ensure he is part of Everton’s exciting future. However, he has perhaps the perfect stage on which to do it, now that Everton are in the Premier League title race.

The candid truth, however, is that the 24-year-old’s time at Goodison Park has been slightly underwhelming up until now, having only scored three times in 35 appearances. Everton fans would have been expecting more after he made the move from Arsenal, but you would have to say that a generous settling in period was afforded to Iwobi as he got used to life at Everton. That grace period is now over, though, and the club will be counting on the midfielder to step up when called upon as the Toffees embark on their most important season in 33 years.

There won’t be anywhere to hide, should Iwobi fail to produce when Everton find themselves in desperate need of goals and assists over the grueling winter months, but should the Nigerian international deliver in Everton’s hour of need, his and the club’s future will change for good.
