Nigeria forward Anthony Nwakaeme was missing in action on Wednesday night as Hapoel Be’er Sheva launched themselves to a successful start for a place in the UEFA Champions League.

Nwakaeme, who was the club’s joint top scorer in the league two seasons ago, endured an injury plagued 2017-18 season, but managed to turn in 10 goals to help the club retain the league title.

The 29-year-old forward has been recuperating from a injury sustained towards the end of last season and wasn’t fit to feature in the 4-1 away win over Estonian club side, FC Flora.

Hapoel Be’er Sheva have never progressed to the UCL group stage in all their attempts; getting knocked out in the play-off rounds twice, but got an emphatic win in the first-leg of the first qualifying round in this season’s competition.

Meanwhile, His club and national teammate, John Ogu returned to the team only this week after his World Cup break, following Nigeria’s elimination from the tournament.
